Safety Meeting Topics

Personal Protective Equipment

When hazards cannot be eliminated through substitution or engineering controls, personal protective equipment (PPE) may be needed to protect against the hazards. Such PPE may include eye and/or face protection, protective clothing, hand protection, feet protection, head protection, respiratory protection, and/or fall protection. [more]

Hearing Protection

Approximately 30 million workers are exposed to noise on the job at levels that could damage their hearing. In addition to hearing loss, excessive noise can effect job performance by causing annoyance, disruption of concentration, and interfere with communications. Excessive noise can also cause pain and nausea. The “good news” is that noise-induced hearing loss is 100 percent preventable but the “bad news” is that once acquired, noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and irreversible. [more]

Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Although it has no detectable odor, CO is often mixed with other gases that have an odor. So, you can inhale CO right along with gases that you can smell and not even know that CO is present. CO is a common industrial hazard resulting from the incomplete burning of natural gas and any other material containing carbon such as gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane, coal, or wood. [more]

Ventilation in Confined Spaces

Over 50% of confined space fatalities are due to atmospheric conditions such as oxygen-deficient, flammable, or toxic atmospheres. Before attempting to control atmospheric hazards through the use of respiratory protection, the effectiveness of ventilating the confined spaces should be considered. This safety meeting covers the two basic types of ventilation methods (general ventilation and local exhaust ventilation) and planning considerations when ventilating confined spaces. [more]
